The Best Hair Styles for Windy Days

Wind blown hairNow that winter is just about here, we can expect more and more cold, windy days until March at the earliest.  This is especially true if you live in areas near large bodies of water, or in areas that are notorious for wind such as Chicago or Buffalo.  High winds can obviously wreak havoc on women’s hair styles and updos, and it can dry out your hair and cause damage as well.  Luckily, there are some hair styles and hair care techniques that can help minimize the impact of windy weather.

In terms of hair styles, you’ll want to look for styles that are relatively “tight.”  For example, a French twist / braid hairstyle would be a terrific option.  The tight weave inherent in this style not only makes it look extremely elegant, but it provides a shield against the impact of the wind as well.   A low pony tail or scrunched style is also great for windy days.

Another terrific option is a bun hairstyle, including the classic bun and messy bun.  Just use a couple of extra bobby pins to solidify the hold even more.  A messy bun in particular works well, because it’s designed to be messy!  Loose curls also work well in the wind, because curly hair is not as susceptible to the messiness caused by wind as are many other hair styles.  Another good alternative is to wear a headband, as this will help keep your locks from blowing around.

Aside from specific hairstyles, there are a couple hair care “best practices” that will help minimize the impact of wind on your hair.  First and foremost, make sure you keep your hair as moisturized as possible at all times.  Use shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that are specifically made for this purpose.  Another tip is to use a deep conditioner frequently, perhaps once every couple of weeks.  This will help to nourish and strengthen your hair, which in turn will make it less susceptible to wind damage.  Similarly, go easy on the heat producing hair tools so that your hair does not become brittle and, by extension, more prone to wind damage.  Also, use a hair serum when it’s windy outside, as this will help smooth down your hair.

So, there you have it!  The next time you find yourself getting ready to go out on the town during windy weather, do not panic!  Follow the advice in this post and you will look as stunning as ever.  Good luck!
