Avoiding the Poofy Hair Blues

Many women all over the globe struggle with thick, poofy hair.  Yes, volume is good, but too much can make your hair exceptionally difficult to property style, particularly with regards to updos.  Simply put, looking like a mushroom head is not ideal!  Luckily, there are a few things you can try in order to mitigate this problem.

Obviously one thing you can do is to get your hair thinned out on a regular basis at your local salon.  However, this will only last for a couple of weeks if you have an extreme case of poofiness, and hence this can be expensive.  While it is still a good idea to have this done on a semi-regular basis (once every 2-3 months), there are other things you can incorporate into your hair care regimen that will help reduce the frequency with which you’ll need to get this done.

One remedy is to start using a smoothing shampoo.  Just make sure you carefully inspect the ingredients and avoid products that contain sodium lauryl or ammonium lauryl, as these chemicals reduce the naturally occurring oils in your hair which can lead to increased dryness and frizz (and by extension…increased poof!).  A good, cheap shampoo for poofy hair that’s worth trying is Everpure by L’Oreal.

Similarly, start using a smoothing conditioner, and get in the habit of leaving some of the conditioner in your hair (i.e., do not rinse 100% of it out).  This will help coat and flatten your hair slightly.  A good technique is to rinse the conditioner out for 10 seconds using cool water, as this will help to seal it in.  You might also want to try doing a final rinse with a vinegar / water solution to help encourage your cuticle layer to lay flat.  You could also use a leave-in conditioner to achieve a similar result.  Coupling this with an anti-frizz product can help accentuate the results.

Also, avoid using heat producing hair tools like hair dryers or straighteners, as the heat from these tools could result in damage which in turn will create frizz and make your hair look even more mushroom-like.  Damage can still occur even if you use a cool temperature setting along with a heat serum, so try to avoid this at all costs.

Finally, make sure you only wear hair styles that are appropriate for poofy hair.  For example, short hair styles can make your hair look poofier, as can layered hairstyles.  So avoid layers, grow your hair longer, and try “tighter” styles like a bun or French twist style.  Good luck!
