Prom 2010 - FAQ
- frequently asked questions about your first formal event
The good news is that if you've got a question about prom, you can be sure that there are dozens of other people
just dying to ask exactly the same question.
What sort of dress do I wear this year?
For most girls this is their first formal occasion and their first chance to wear really pretty dresses - you'll
be looking for that "one of a kind" outfit that really sets you apart from the crowd.
If you're not sure what sorts of dresses are worn at your high school or college proms, check out a few photos
of the previous event online and you'll soon get an idea. There's sure to be some photos hanging up or in the
local press.
I'd like my date to be something more than a friend, what do I do?
There's something special about prom and chances are that you may end up kissing -
if he asked you, he's probably hoping to kiss you anyway.
What you need to be sure about is that you don't mind losing his friendship if things don't work out.
How do I look special for my date?
Even if you haven't got a date, you'll want to look fantastic.
Plan in advance to have matching shoes and jewellery and spend a bit of time planning your make-up.
For an evening event, you can wear slightly stronger makeup, as the lighting is lower and you need more to have
the same effect.
Treating yourself to a new lipstick can be just the boost you need, as well as spoiling your nails with a little
polish and using some good quality mascara to make your eyes look fabulous.
Prepare - pluck your eyebrows, shave or wax your legs, moisturise your skin and give your hair a good deep
conditioning treatment. Practice your hair style in plenty of time -
make sure you've had it cut well, so that it will style easily.
By the time prom night comes around, you'll be feeling like the most beautiful woman on the planet and ready to
step out and really wow him!
How far should I go?
You only have to watch a few movies to realise that some guys will be hoping to have more than a kiss and a
cuddle!
Decide beforehand how far you want to go and don't go any farther - if needs be, plan your escape if things get
out of hand.
Alternatively, why not plan an after-prom party for the other members of your senior class - you can still have
fun with your friends without putting yourself into a vulnerable situation.
Should I ask him or wait?
If you like him, then get a friend to find out how he feels about you. Don't wait too long or someone else
will have invited him anyway!

Prom FAQ for guys
- what you need to know about prom
If you want to invite a girl along to prom on a first date, you'll need to prepare a little in advance.
Whilst most girls are thrilled to have a "proper date" for prom, you don't want to leave anything to chance.
Make sure you hang out with her a little more before you actually ask her out. If she hasn't got a date,
she's gonna love that you asked her.
If you're asking your existing girlfriend, don't forget to make it an occasion she won't forget. Don't
just assume that she'll go with you, girls like to be asked!
Then, here's a few tips of what you need to get ready in advance:-
- Check out whether you can go with a group of friends, so that you can rent a limo and split the cost.
If your budget doesn't run to a limousine, then see if you can borrow a nice car and decorate it with lights or
something special, but inexpensive.
- Ask her what sort of restaurant she'd like to eat at and book a table. If you're on a budget, make
sure you get the place looking great and arrange to order in - with a few candles and the right atmosphere this
can be just as special and romantic for her.
- Order a corsage - once you know what colour her dress is, make sure the colors match.
- Be prepared - take your mobile phone, some cash, a handkerchief (just in case she needs one) and make sure
your shoes are well polished beforehand (don't try and polish them wearing your tux or suit!)
As this is probably your first formal event, don't be embarassed to ask for advice.
For info and tips on grooming and looking great, you can ask your parents, or do a search on Google to find
tons of products and advice to get you looking at your best.
If you don't want to ask your parents, then ask either a teacher that you respect or a friends parents if you
find it easier to talk to them.
