Top-5 Updo FAQs

For this week’s blog post, I thought I would put together a top-5 FAQ article focused on updo tips & updo hairstyles for different situations. Whether it’s wedding hairstyles, short hair updos, or updos for long hair, the tips below will always apply.  

Question 1: What are some tips to ensure my updo looks as good as possible for the longest possible amount of time? 

Answer: Make sure you avoid touching your hair, as this can introduce oils that breakdown the stylized parts (updos for long hair are especially susceptible). Also, updo hairstyles tend to retain their shape longer by using hairsprays that resist humidity. Also, if you do a lot of curling or straightening, use a thermal protection spray to keep your hair healthy, and use a conditioner frequently to lock the moisture back into your hair.  

Question 2: I am going to a party directly from work. What is the most efficient way to transition my hairstyle from the office to the nightclub? 

Answer: Hair updos can be done “on the run” if you are prepared in advance. Put together a small carrying case containing your favorite updo necessities – mini flat iron, hairspray, bobby pins, hair-bands, etc. Sneak away into the bathroom for 5 minutes right before you leave the office and you’ll be good to go!

Question 3: What can be done to prevent updo hairstyles from unraveling as the night progresses.

Answer: If done correctly, hair updos should certainly last even the longest of nights. That said, sometimes you might find yourself in nasty weather or some other extenuating circumstance, so once again preparation is the key. See the answer to question 2 above. Or simply brush it out. If all else fails, cut your losses and go home! 

Question 4: What are some super easy hair updos that can be done by pretty much anyone? 

Answer: If you’re talking about updos for long hair, the easiest style would be something akin to a pony tail or low chignon. To add flavor, you could put it to the side or add texture. If you are referring to short hair updos, you can utilize backcombing and texturing to achieve the desired shape. 

Question 5: What kind of wedding hairstyles are unique yet classy?

Answer: Wedding hairstyles featuring a bun have been a staple for decades, and there are many variations of the bun that will help you stand out. From large to small, top to side, messy to polished, there are a ton of bun varieties you could try. The specific types are beyond the scope of this article, so do some research, and experiment to see what looks best on you.

The Myth of the Elusive Short Hair Updo

Obviously, all women have varying lengths of hair.  Even terms like “long hair” and “short hair” can each be broken down into dozens or even hundreds of degrees of magnitude.  Some of this variety is due to personal preference, while some is due to necessity (for instance, a businesswoman may want her hair to be short and businesslike because this style suits her daily routine and work environment).   

One of the myths out there is that updo choices are much more limited with short hair compared to long.  I honestly do not believe this.  Whether it is short hair updos or updos for long hair, any woman can look stunning and elegant with the right look.   

There are multiple ways to discover your options regarding short hair updos.  One way is to do research online to find pictures of elegant short hair styles that you can experiment with.  You can also look through magazines, especially those that feature celebrities, in order to get an idea of what is in fashion at any given time.  Another option is to simply ask your hairdresser for advice.  Oftentimes, he / she will be able to simply look at the shape of your face and suggest the best style for you.  

So, don’t limit yourself based on the length of your hair.  Although many women lack perfect hair, with modern advancements in hairstyling, every type of hair can be designed in the most attractive way. There are plenty of hairstyles to choose from and there are plenty of ways to look special. In fact, with so many short hair updos to choose from, there is literally no end to the number of options available. Updos for short hair have been as popular over the years as updos for long hair, and they will continue to be popular in 2011 and beyond.

Obviously, your choice of wedding hairstyles, along with the wedding gown itself, will go a long way toward determining how you will look on your wedding day.  If you want fabulous hair on your big day, careful planning and preparation are critical.  The good news is that there are so many hairstyles suitable for weddings, you are sure to find one that looks perfect on you.  Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when deciding on your ideal wedding hairstyle.  

1. Know the current trends.  Do your homework and research the wide variety of wedding hairstyles out there.  You can look for a desirable wedding hair updo in bridal fashion magazines, or online. Knowing the latest trends will enable you to specify your preferences and requirements to your hairstylist in order to have him/her create a customized hairstyle for you. 
   
2. Consider your wedding dress.  It goes without saying that your wedding hairstyle should complement your dress and not compete with it.  Find a hairstyle that seems to harmonize with your dress in the best possible way. 
   
3. Consider the venue.  Are you having a formal wedding, or one that is less traditional?  If you plan to have a very formal wedding, then a classic updo is probably the best option.  For less formal events like beach weddings or garden ceremonies, it would be best to have a less formal hairstyle. 
   
4. Consider what’s on top.  Are you planning to wear a headpiece or veil?  If so, this definitely needs to be taken into account as you evaluate the wide variety of wedding hairstyles available.  The best approach is to show the headpiece to your hairstylist and let him/her recommended a hairstyle.  Your stylist can determine whether you should go with a hair updo or another style.

Six Random Prom Updos

Ah, the prom, what wonderful memories! That is, assuming you had good hair!  Prom updos can make you look glamorous, or crappy, so it’s important to find what works best for YOU.  And to find what works best you must understand your choices.  There is such a wide variety of prom updos out there that it would be impractical to touch on all of them, so instead let’s just have a look at 6 that have been around for awhile now.

1. Chignon: Chignon prom updos are popular hairstyles for celebrities, so why not the prom? This is a pretty easy style to do, and you don’t even need bangs. To do the chignon style it is best to first wash & dry your hair. Curl it with the best flat iron you can find, pull it into a low and loose ponytail, braid it, secure it toward the end with a band, and roll the complete braid to form the chignon. Secure the style with hair pins and hair spray.
   
2. Low Ponytail: The low ponytail may be the most casual of all prom updos. All you need to do is use a band to secure your hair after you have made a ponytail! It does not get much easier than that! A variation of this would be to create an asymmetrical effect by virtue of doing a low ponytail on one side of your head so that your hair flows over the shoulder.
   
3. Braids: Braids are back in style with regard to prom updos. Use braids to part your hair for a standard updo or even form buns to create a chignon. Updo hairstyles utilizing braids can provide an absolutely stunning effect.
   
4. Loose: Letting your hair loose is another popular form of updo. There are a variety of loose prom updos out there, andthis look is ideal for shoulder length hair or even long hair.
   
5. Twist: Twist is a look that women in the Victorian age used and it is still popular today. One way of experimenting with prom updos using the twist style is to roll your hair, starting from the bangs and going all the way down to your neck, and then keep it all in place with a band. The rest of your hair can be styled into a bun or chignon. This is an ideal style for those with straight hair.
   
6. Half Updo: The half updo style is best if you want to accentuate your cheekbones. You can achieve this style of prom updo on your own using different items like barrettes and bands. The best half updos will make your hair look sleek and voluminous. There are different styles available and you can easily choose what looks best on you. 

The Skinny on Wedding Hairstyles

Every girl getting married wants to look good compared to every other girl at the marriage ceremony. The dress, shoes, make-up, hair, accessories, and everything else is critically important. Each is like one piece of a larger puzzle.   

That said, as a bride your first priority is usually to choose your wedding gown.  Once the gown has been finalized, the next step is to check out a variety of wedding hairstyles and select the one that compliments the gown and your overall look in the best possible way.  Both the gown and the hair style are critical. Really, you need a sophisticated gown as well as a stylish hair updo to achieve the ultimate in elegance and beauty.   

The good news is that finding exquisite wedding hairstyles is easy. Obviously, there are tons of websites with pictures of updo hairstyles from which you could choose, so that is always a great place to start.  Another option is to consult hair stylists, or other women who were recently married, to get tips and advice on formal updo hairstyles.    

Of course, the bride is not the only one at the wedding concerned with finding the best hair updo.  Bridesmaid hairstyles can also be identified using the same tactics.  Your choices may depend on the look of the bridal party as a whole, but no matter what you will still find plenty of bridesmaid hairstyles from which to choose.  Look through as many pictures as you can, and look for bridesmaid hairstyles that will compliment your personality as well as your dress. 

One thing to keep in mind, whether you are the bride or bridesmaid, is that your choice of hair updo is not necessarily limited by your hair length.  If, for example, you have short hair but you fall in love with a long-hair hairstyle, you could always get hair extensions.  My point here is that you are only limited by your own imagination.
