How to Remove Hair Dye Colors

If you have found yourself in a panic because you need to know how to remove hair dye colors, try to remain clam. The world is not coming to an end, you do not have to cut all your hair off, and you will not be forced to wear a hat every day! All you need is a helpful guide to instruct you how to remove dye from hair and you’ll be as good as new!

Although there are products you can buy to remove hair dye, there are also things around the house that may work just as well. The goal is to address the problem promptly; the longer you allow the dye to bond to the hair, the harder it will be to remove. So find your preferred solution and get it done ASAP!

  • Dawn Detergent – Blue Dawn dish detergent will remove dye from hair as well as it removes skunk spray from your dog. Keep in mind, this is what activists use to clean birds and other wildlife after an oil spill because it works! You only need a couple drops: lather it in, and repeat if needed. Dawn dish soap is extremely drying to your hair, so you will want to follow with a deep conditioner or even leave olive oil on your hair for a few hours.

  • Head & Shoulders – Pretty much any dandruff shampoo will work, but Head & Shoulders seems to be the go-to brand for those wondering how to remove hair dye. If the color is extremely dark, mix a little baking soda with the shampoo. Like dish soap, baking soda dries your hair, so use a deep conditioner after.

  • Tide – Although Tide is often recommended to remove hair dye, you can use any laundry soap providing it contains no bleach! Just remember to not let this sit on your hair for too long: scrub it in, rinse it, repeat as needed, and moisturize well.

  • Commercial Products – If you can get to the store without too much embarrassment, you can purchase a product specifically designed to remove the dye. A few popular ones include Roux Clean Touch, Jheri Redding Color Fix and Color Ooops Hair Color Remover.

Remove Hair Dye Colors from Skin

Even those who have never had a bad dye job have found themselves needing to know how to remove hair dye from skin and nails. Whether the dye splattered or dripped, this is easily remedied with the right products.

  • Toothpaste – There are a surprising number of abrasive ingredients in toothpaste that will effectively remove the dye from your skin. Apply some to the area and rub until the stain is gone. If you don’t have any petroleum jelly to apply to your hairline when you dye it, you can always use toothpaste. It won’t cause breakouts either, so it’s ideal for sensitive skin.

  • Nail Polish Remover – As long as your nail polish remover has acetone, it will remove hair dye. This can be irritating so don’t overdo it.

  • Petroleum Jelly – You can apply this, let it sit or scrub a little. This is better for protection but will remove lighter shades quite well.

Whether you need to remove dye from hair, skin or nails, you likely have products around the house that can help. If you are someone who dyes your hair often, it’s not a bad idea to keep a commercial product handy just in case, as these are less drying to your hair than the other options.
