Hair Color Tips: How to Prevent Fading Hair Dye

It doesn’t matter if you spent top dollar at the salon or did your color yourself, there is nothing worse than fading hair dye. It takes time and money to achieve that glamorous look so if there are hair dye tips you can do to hold onto that color longer, you should be making use of any helpful ideas you can get. This is especially true with black or deep red shades that seem to fade noticeably quicker than other shades.

Wash Your Hair Less

Unless you are out running 10 miles a day - or perhaps digging ditches - there really is no need to wash your hair daily. Thanks to the vast array of dry shampoos that are available to absorb oils at the roots, you can stop your fading hair much easier. The more frequently you wash your hair, the more often you’ll need to have it dyed. When you use dry shampoo, you aren’t forced to wear a ponytail or a bun when you have second-day hair.

Shampooing Tips

One of the most important and easiest hair dye tips to follow is to use a shampoo that is specially formulated for color treated hair. These will often contain a glaze as well to keep your hair looking shiny. Some people also swear by using baby shampoo to stop fading hair dye because it’s super gentle and typically contains fewer chemicals.

It should be noted that washing your hair with cooler water could help reduce fading hair color as well. Not to mention, it leaves your hair extra shiny.

Sun Protection

Even if you take heed to these fading hair dye tips, you still risk compromising your color every time you go out in the sun. If you are going to be outside all day, wear a hat or scarf. Understand that even a few minutes unprotected can do a number on your dye. Fortunately, there are hair products available that contain an SPF which can also help.

Going Swimming?

No one wants to hear that they need to wear a swimming cap to stop fading hair dye, but it helps. Both chlorine and salt water can negatively impact your hair color, so try and rinse your hair as soon as you get out of the water. Then, put on a wide-brimmed hat!

It’s also not a bad idea to put a deep conditioner in your hair and put it in braids if you are going to be at the beach all day long, as this will offer protection as well. If you are going in the ocean and you are leaving conditioner in your hair or wearing a sunscreen on it, please remember to make sure it’s environmentally-friendly, biodegradable, and free of harsh chemicals that can disrupt delicate ecosystems.

Go Natural

Last on the list of hair dye tips is to stay away from hot rollers, irons and straighteners as much as you can help it. Heat from these styling tools not only weakens your hair, it can result in fading hair color as well. At least try to cut down your usage to every other day by putting your hair back in a ponytail or a casual updo.
