This partial up do look is easier to create.  Start by wearing a few fronds of hair down around your ears and neck - ideal if you're a little self-conscious about your ears but are keen for that "elegant" updo look.

This style is also the basis for a more casual or "messy" look, and can be a great look for prom and party occassions.
