Many professional hairstyles can be created at home with the right equipment. A good quality blow-dryer with a
cool-shot button helps to make the hair cuticle lie flat so that a sleek look can be produced.
A variety of brushes are also handy to create the style you
want. Big round brushes are excellent for producing waves and big loose curls whereas a flat paddle brush will

Products
The main styling products for hair are hairspray,
mousse and gel. Obviously there are hundreds of variations of these basic products but pretty much everything
available falls into one of these three categories.
The amount of styling product you use should be kept
to a minimum because large amounts used frequently can not only damage the hair but can also clog up the
cuticles to produce a heavy lank look.
Gels are better suited to short styles that don’t
generally move about whereas mousse can be used on all lengths of hair. Normally mousse is applied while the
hair is wet and then as the hair is dried and styled the mousse helps to hold the shape. This type of styling
product is great for styles that are intended to be able to move around such as long straight styles and those
with curls and waves.
Hairspray is the most commonly used styling product
because it can be used on any length of hair and on any style - depending on the strength of the hairspray, the
style will stay still. However hairspray is also the product that does the most damage to the hair and so should
be used in moderation.
Trying to brush out a heavy layer of spray can be damaging to the hair while pulling and
tugging to try and get through. Washing without brushing doesn't help either - the hair starts tangled and becomes
more so during the wash.
