Boys Hair 101: Advice for Young Boys Haircuts

Boy enjoys his first proper hair cut!
While you would think that it would be easy
to pick out a boys haircut, sometimes it’s actually quite challenging. When you have a girl, you can always
pull her hair back in a barrette, ponytail or braid; when you have a boy you don’t have these convenient
luxuries. Boys haircuts can actually be more difficult to decide on because you want one that will lay right,
look great and be easy to maintain. And that’s a lot of things to consider.
Considerations
- Hair Texture – Just because a boys haircut looks spectacular
in a magazine, does not mean that it’s going to lay the same way on your child. Hair texture plays a huge
role in the finished look. If your boy has super curly hair, that straight boys hair style is likely not
going to look even close when done. Of course, if you have nothing better to do than dry their hair
straight every day, by all means, go for it
- Cowlick – Many people have a natural cowlick in their hair.
These just happen to be more noticeable in boys hair because it is shorter so there is less there
weighing it down. If you’re not sure if your child has a cowlick, ask a stylist, they’ll be able to tell
you. There's a good chance that you’ve already noticed it though.
- Personality – Why force a haircut on your child that he
absolutely hates? Sure, that super short buzz may be easy to maintain, but if he’s into skateboarding and
his friends all have an emo look, then you’re just hindering his personal expression.
Popular Boys Haircuts
- The Classic – Also known as the side-swept cut, this is a
look that has stood the test of time. The hair is brushed to either side from the crown which creates a
sweep.
- The Comb Down – The hair usually falls just above the
eyebrows as all the hair is layered and combed forward from the crown.
- The Emo – Considered a bit Goth, this cut is like the comb
down only it’s much longer in the front and back.
- The Bieber – Thanks to this super famous singer, you have
another selection in the long list of stylish haircuts. The Bieber has long layers that flip to one side
at the ends.
- Buzz Cut – Also known as the military cut, this is one of
the most practical choices for boys haircuts for young, super active boys in the summer months. The
entire look is created with clippers.
- The Spike – If you don’t mind running a little product
through your child’s hair, you can create small spikes. The great thing about the spiked boys haircut is
that it can be worn down with no product as well.
- The Shag – There are few boys who don’t look adorable in the
shag. This disheveled look is created with tons of layers, and it’s meant to look messy, which is always
a bonus for a busy mom!
It is important to note that if your child has super curly hair, it’s often recommended to
choose a boys hair style that’s a little longer. The added weight from the length of the hair will help control
curl and frizz a little easier.
So go out and try a few of these tips the next time you need to style your child's hair. Good
luck!
