Black Girl Hair Tips: Black Updos & More

Believe it or not, black updos are easier to do
than creating updos on Caucasian hair because of the added texture; since African-American hair is traditionally
much coarser, styles are held with less effort.
If this is the hair you have, consider yourself blessed because a black updo can be achieved in a
fraction of the time.
Protection
Just because your hair is coarse does not
mean that it doesn’t need a great deal of protection from hot irons and styling techniques. You should be using
products that are specifically designed for your hair type. Avoid items that contain silicone and petroleum, as
they are not moisturizing your hair. Sure, they may make your black girl hair look shiny, but they are actually
drying it out more.
A leave-in deep conditioner is highly recommended and you should use a protective spray if you are using a hot
iron. It’s also a good idea to protect your hair while you sleep by wearing a scarf or something
similar.
Messy Black Updo
Who doesn’t love the idea of black updos that can be worn for
nearly any occasion? If you have hair that falls between your chin and shoulders, this black girl hair look
is for you because no curling is involved so your hair won’t be shortened and hard to put
up.
- Begin by pulling the front of your hair up and then
twisting. While you twist, push the hair forward a bit so you create some volume in the front. Pin this
section of hair on top of your head; don’t be concerned with the hair hanging out, this step is only to
create the poof in the front.
- Now, skip the sides of your hair because you’ll do these
pieces last. The next step to creating this messy black updo is to grab random pieces of hair on the rest
of your head, twist and anchor with safety pins. When possible, you want pieces of hair sticking out from
the end of these twists. So when you anchor them, leave room to achieve this
look.
- When you get to the sections of hair closer to the nape of
your neck, you may want to twist them upwards. This will create a poof of hair near the back center of
your head, offering the illusion of a lot of length.
- The side pieces are the last sections to twist to create
this black girl hair updo. You can either twist these pieces back toward the poof in the back of your
head, or you can anchor them on the top of your head. If your hair is long enough, you may even want to
create a crisscross.
These black updos look great just left alone, or you can dress
them up with a decorative hair accessory. As long as you anchored the twists well, they should stay all day
or all night.
