Princess Diana was a real fashion icon at this time and much of what she is photographed in set the style for
the day.
Popular TV programs, such as Dynasty and Dallas set a trend for big hair styles, glamorous looks and

The power suit was the thing, being worn by both men and women and for the first time people started to really
take note of the brand name of the clothing they and others were wearing. Designers like Donna Karan, Calvin
Klein and Ralph Lauren offered high street fashions for men and women.
Clothing shapes changed as men and women started to wear loose shirts and close fitting trousers.
Platform shoes were THE style of footwear to be seen in.

Classic Films & Music from 1980
The best selling album, Thriller, was released by Michael Jackson. Madonne released her popular album
"Like a Virgin". Other memorable songs from this era include Celebration (Kool & the Gang), Relax
(Frankie Goes to Hollywood), Walking on Sunshine (Katrina and the Waves) and YMCA (Village
People).
New Wave music came in, heralding in bands and artists such as U2, Billy Idol, Blondie, Culture Club,
Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears, The Police. It also brought in more fitted,
body-conscious clothing and shorter, spiky hairstyles.
